Multiples and More Question of the Week: What’s In A Name?

Choosing the names of multiples (like every other aspect of being a multiple parent) is just a little more complicated than choosing a name for a singleton. Not only do you have to consider which name you want to hear yourself repeating (in various tones of voice) for the rest of your life, you have to consider how it sounds along with that of their siblings.
This week, we want to hear about your name-choosing process!
How did you choose your multiples’ names?
  • Did you stick with family names?
  • How do you feel about “matchy” names?
  • Did you worry about their names “coordinating?”
  • Did you name your babies before you met them, or wait until you saw them to assign names?
  • What were your second choices?
  • Did you consider the popularity of a name as a deciding factor?

QOTW: When Did You Go Back to Work?

I stayed home with my kids until they started VPK and it was a decision …

  1. The Adventures of Grunty and Chubbs

I answered the question at my blog!

  2. Soooo glad that this was the question of the week. I get asked this a lot, and I enjoyed clearing it up for everyone!! 🙂

  3. Dianna@KennedyAdventures

YAY! How much fun! I'm writing my post, and will put it up on Monday.

  4. We had such a hard time with the names! I won't use anything on the top 100 list. And we really had a hard time with 'Baby B'. It was pretty late into the 3rd tri before we finalized their names.

  5. Mom of the Twinkies and Tot!

My first time participating in QOTW! Answers posted on our blog of how we named our daughters, Lilah Renee and Lexie Cecile!

  6. Great question! I'm curious to see if everyone overthinks this. I know we did! My post will be up this evening.

My sisters are twins (Lisa & Laura), so they had a LOT to say about naming our twin girls. They didn't like their names starting with the same letter; they felt like it made it easier for people to confuse them and it was a problem since they were athletes (same first initial on jerseys). We decided to have two very different names.

  8. DH and I only talked about names once during the early part of the pregnancy. And it was really, really clear that we weren't going to agree on names. At all. So it was somewhat of a taboo topic for a long time. Somewhere around 6 months I named the babies in utero and tried them out for a while – calling them by name every time I talked to them. "Ryan quit kicking me. Connor move over!" I went through several iterations of names before I settled on two I liked. I had called them by those names for so long that by the time that we finally got around to talking about names DH said he didn't think there was anything to talk about – I had already named them. And he was right. I couldn't even imagine calling them by anything else. Baby B's middle name was the only thing that wasn't decided. We both loved Alexander, but I didn't want the initials CAD (especially since his brother was going to be RAD). I wanted a middle name that started with E for family reasons but hadn't decided for sure until he was born and they brought him to meet me for the first time and I said his full name as they handed him to me.

Our names weren't decided by who was out first, but by where they were in utero – the little kicker on my right (who still never never stops moving those feet), and his much more laid back back who sat on my nerve when he wanted attention.

  9. I could have sworn that there was a McLinky up earlier.

Oh well. My response is posted on Double the Fun and Twice the Confusion.

  10. good question…this is my first qotw to answer! i don't think i have ever answered this one on my blog 🙂
