With all of the chick flicks I’ve dragged Scott to, he was beyond excited to see John Carter. Neither one of us knew much about the movie before heading in, and trust me, it’s for the best. There truly is no way to describe the film without giving anything away. Scott described it as Star Wars meets Chronicle of Riddick meets Gladiator meets 300 meets romantic comedy. At first I thought “what in the world am I watching?” but by the end of the film I looked at Scott and said “Best.Movie.Ever!”. Here is the info on the film:
From Academy Award®–winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton comes “John Carter”—a sweeping action-adventure set on the mysterious and exotic planet of Barsoom (Mars). “John Carter” is based on a classic novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, whose highly imaginative adventures served as inspiration for many filmmakers, both past and present. The film tells the story of war-weary, former military captain John Carter (Taylor Kitsch), who is inexplicably transported to Mars where he becomes reluctantly embroiled in a conflict of epic proportions amongst the inhabitants of the planet, including Tars Tarkas (Willem Dafoe) and the captivating Princess Dejah Thoris (Lynn Collins). In a world on the brink of collapse, Carter rediscovers his humanity when he realizes that the survival of Barsoom and its people rests in his hands.
I’m not giving any more details on this film. I know, isn’t that horrible? It is so hard not to talk about this movie because you truly have to walk into it knowing as little possible. I will say there is enough action for the men and enough romance for the women. Plus ladies, let’s face it Taylor Kitsch walking around in what is essentially a loin cloth the entire film is pretty amazing. Oh, and definitely pay the upcharge and see this film in 3D!
