Jess of Life in the White House

The featured blogger of the week is Jess of Life in the White House. Jess is the proud MoM of almost 3 year old Avelyn and 9 month old triplets, Henry, James and Elanor.

What made you decide to start a blog?

I started blogging in November 2007, after 2 years of trying to get pregnant and not having it happen. Since we were going to start seeing doctors and finding out what the problem was I started writing about it, it was my outlet to deal with the pain and confusion. I found a fantastic community of women who understood, and it just grew from there. Now I don’t blog about infertility, but every day life in the White house.

Were you surprised to discover you were pregnant with triplets?

Not really. Having gone through treatment, we knew there were 2 eggs and that I had a small cyst on my left ovary (which ended up hiding what became our little girl). Once I started getting positive pregnancy tests a full week and half earlier than with our oldest, I knew there was definitely more than one in there. I didn’t dare think that it could be 3+ plus, but I had a really good idea.

How did Avelyn respond to finding out she was going to be a big sister to 3 new babies?

Avelyn has been absolutely great! She didn’t get it, as most 2 year olds don’t, but once they came home from the hospital she was in love, a bit too in love, she gets a little rough with them sometimes. She’s a great big sister and is always very proud to tell anyone that those are her babies.

You mentioned to me that you cloth diaper your kids, what are your best tips for parents thinking of cloth diapering?

Don’t be overwhelmed. It is VERY easy to get overwhelmed. Talk to others who cloth diaper, read blogs, look around online, go to a cloth diaper show. Get a feel for what the different kinds are…none of the brands are “right” or “wrong”, just different. We’ve tried a couple of different ones including prefolds with covers, our favorite is the BumGenius 4.0 one size. I think it’s the best and easiest to use.

What are some of your favorite things to do as a family?

Being outside. We built a swing set this summer and it is so nice, especially now that it is cooler, to have the babies all out in their swings or stroller, while Avelyn runs around. We can enjoy being together and manage to get a bit of yard work in too. We also really like piling on the couch, watching a movie and having popcorn (obviously, the babies don’t get much out of this). Fall/Winter is our favorite time of year, so we really try to take advantage of spending time together.

What question, or questions, do you have for the other families in the community?

Is the babies’ growing up (meaning walking etc) going to be as crazy as I think it is? I just look at our oldest and think, “oh boy…3 of them, like that, at once?!”

Be sure to leave your answer in the comment section and then head over to Life in the White House to leave some bloggy love for Jess!

  2. We used gates a lot more with the twins than with our singleton. At almost 2, the only one left is on the stairs, but there was some serious fencing going on for a few months. At this point, I wince and hold my breath every time they try to open the bathroom door. It’s coming and probably sooner than I want.
